Our Mission

“The Judicial Administration is committed to fairly dispensing justice in the Cayman Islands and disposing of cases as quickly and efficiently as is consistent with the interests of justice and to providing international legal assistance pursuant to treaties such as the Mutual Legal Assistant Treaty with the United States of America.”

Message from the Hon. Chief Justice

I am pleased to welcome you to the Judicial and Legal Administration’s website, which has just recently been relaunched. We hope you will enjoy the site’s new look and feel as you navigate its pages. Wherever possible we have tried to improve the site’s functionality which will be evident in the coming months as we launch an array of new e-services.

In keeping with our mission to fairly dispense justice, in a timely and efficient manner, as well as providing international legal assistance we have chosen to rely on the use of information technology as a means of staying current and modern in our approach.

Our vision is to develop this website as a portal to safe and secure access to the justice system by the public, both here and at home abroad. We hope you find the site both user-friendly and useful. By all means, please send us your feedback.

Your observations and suggestions are invaluable in terms of our on-going efforts to fine-tune and improve the site.

The Hon. Anthony Smellie Q.C., J.P.,

Organisation of the Judicature of the Cayman Islands

The Judiciary is one of three separate arms of Government. Its function is to administer the law independently of the Executive and the Legislative arms of Government; an independence that is safeguarded in the Constitution of the Cayman Islands. The Judiciary is comprised of the following jurisdictions in ascending order within the hierarchy of the courts:

  • THE SUMMARY COURT – Hears civil and criminal matters including Juvenile, Youth and Coroner’s Courts.
  • THE GRAND COURT – Hears appeals from the Summary Courts as well as criminal, civil, family, and estate matters. The Financial Services Division is the most recent jurisdictions to be added.
  • COURT OF APPEAL – The Highest Court in the Cayman Islands in which civil and criminal appeals from the Grand and Summary Courts can be heard.
  • PRIVY COUNCIL – The highest Court from which a an appeal from the Court of Appeal can be heard.
